THE ADD COACHABILITY INDEX

©1994 Madelyn Griffith-Haynie for The Optimal Functioning Institute™
http://www.addcoach.com/mgh

To better suit the needs of individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder, the ADD Coachability Index adapts the Coachability Index© developed by Thomas Leonard for Coach-U. (Duplication must credit both parties).

ARE YOU READY FOR ADD COACHING?

Coaching works best when a client is fully ready, willing and able to take the actions that will be necessary:

* to learn more about yourself and the way you operate;
* to learn how to maximize your ability to function;
* to begin to systematize your ADD Challenges so that ADD gets out of your way so that life becomes something much more satisfying than "swimming upstream."

In order for the magic of coaching to work you need to be at the place in life where you are "coachable," which means that:

* most family of origin issues and conflicts have been resolved;
* you are ready to experience success without struggle;
* you have enough room in your schedule to give priority focus to your coaching appointments, preparation time and coaching assignments.

This test helps us both determine how coachable you are right now.

HOW COACHABLE ARE YOU?
Rate the following statements from 1 to 5
[1 is **less true** and 5 is **MORE true** ]

1. This is the right time for me to accept coaching. I have handled (or am handling) my psychological issues and am ready, willing and able to be coached to take the actions I will need to take to develop the systems I will need to live the life I am committed to leading.

2. I realize that there are no "magic bullets" and that the only answers for me are within myself. I rely on others (including my Coach) for feedback, information and guidance, not for *answers*. I am fully willing to do the work and let the coach do the coaching.

3. I can be relied upon to do the work that will be necessary to set up the systems to allow me to be on time for calls and appointments, to work on assignments and "self-appointments," and to handle my coaching fees responsibly.

4. I fully intend to do the things I say I am going to do. Those times when distractibility or hyperfocus gets in the way I can be counted on to "clean it up" and implement new systems to keep myself on track in the future. I keep my word without struggling or sabotaging - and don't beat myself up when I "oops".

5. I will give my Coach the benefit of the doubt and "try on" new concepts or different ways of doing things. At the same time, I will honestly examine and report the difficulties I encounter so that my Coach and I can refine these new ways so that they work the way *I* work.

6. I will speak straight (tell the whole truth) to my Coach. I realize that my job is to take care of myself and that it is not necessary to take care of my Coach. I trust that my Coach will have the skills to guide me gently to where I need to go if I am inappropriate - without making me feel bad in the process. I don't have to sugarcoat my truth for my Coach or worry about how I will be perceived.

7. If I feel that I am not getting what I need or expect from my Coach, I will share this as soon as I sense it and make requests designed to allow me to get what I want and need from the relationship. I will not complain, beat around the bush or hedge. I will make as clear a request for what I need as I am able, and will take the coaching to learn to language change-requests powerfully in a charge-neutral way.

8. I am willing to stop or change the self-defeating behaviors which limit my success. I realize that it will take a while to develop the new habits that I will need to live powerfully with ADD - and I will make a conscious effort to do the work to make the changes in my life until the new habits take hold.

9. I have separated ego from accomplishment. I am someone who can "share credit" for my success with my Coach without feeling that I somehow cheated by not doing it alone.

10. I see coaching as a worthwhile investment in my life. I have prioritized my finances so that I have discretionary funds I choose to use for coaching, and will not regret or suffer about the fee.

TOTAL SCORE
SCORING KEY:

10 - 20 Not Coachable right now: Come back to coaching when you've spent some time with a counselor or therapist to handled some developmental issues, or ask if your coach offers Pre-coaching Readiness Development support.

21 - 30 Coachable, but make sure ground rules and boundaries are honored and that you spend extra time working on your own growth.

31 - 40 Easily Coachable; spend time working on key shifts and distinctions to raise your score so that you will be able to take fuller advantage of your coaching.

41 - 50 Extremely Coachable: ask your coach to request a lot from you - but make sure you don't fall into the "Perfect Client" trap. Be sure to let your coach know when life demands coupled with coaching homework become too much for you to handle without feeling pressured. (If you find yourself reluctant to call for your appointment because you didn't do your homework, call anyway and share that thought first! Then request a slower pace for a few weeks while you build your accountability muscles. Set it up so you get to WIN!)
